It’s all about marine biodiversity...
Posidonia Oceanica Seagrass is a valuable Lemnos resource.
It is more efficient than the Amazon Rainforest in storing carbon from the atmosphere, protecting sea life and the planet.
Our initial goals
Our initial goals
Mapping
Map existing marine forests to begin the process of creating public moorings, and provide awareness and guidance to communities.
mobilisation
Work with the local community and the Lemnian fishermen to identify and promote measures to address the problem of diminishing fish stocks.
Why support us?
Our seas are in danger! The Posidonia Seagrass beds may take up to 100 years to regenerate if damaged. Funding is needed to map the current coastal seagrass of Lemnos to raise awareness of its value and to prevent further damage. We must protect the marine biodiversity of Lemnos. Let us work together for our beloved sea.
What is the significance of Posidonia Meadows
Biodiversity
Posidonia meadows are home to a wide variety of marine species, from fish and crustaceans to invertebrates and plants, providing shelter and food.
Oxygen Production
Posidonia plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis, improving seawater quality. They are the lungs of the Mediterranean producing beneficial oxygen.
Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide
Posidonia sequesters large amounts of carbon dioxide, helping to combat climate change.
Coastline Protection
Grasslands absorb wave energy, reducing coastal erosion and protecting beaches
Fisheries Support
These areas are important to fisheries as they provide refuge and spawning grounds for many commercially important species.
