With great joy and enthusiasm, the Lemnos Marine Conservation team, in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Conservation “Archipelagos“, held two special events that aimed to inform and raise awareness among teachers and citizens of our island about the importance of protecting marine biodiversity.
Workshop for educators
The first event, which took place on Saturday 23 November at the Apothiki in Myrina, was addressed to the island’s teachers. Their participation filled us with hope for the future, as we recognize that proper education of the new generation is the basis for the protection of marine biodiversity.
Through interesting presentations by the Archipelagos Institute’s research team, the problems that threaten our seas, such as overfishing, plastic pollution, tourism and the effects of climate change were discussed. With the assistance of the Web2Learn team, the importance of citizen science as a tool for collective action and how it can be a powerful lever for environmental protection was highlighted.
The response of teachers to the proposals to include these topics in the educational process confirms their commitment to inspire the new generation to protect the environment. We thank them warmly for their interest and active participation.
Local community at the heart of Monday’s event
On Monday 25 November, the Warehouse was filled with citizens of all ages who responded to our call for an open information and discussion meeting. The event highlighted the importance of awareness and active participation of the local community in protecting our island’s marine wealth.
Presentations by the Archipelagos Institute shed light on important issues for the marine biodiversity of Lemnos and the Aegean, while the first scientific observations from the research vessel “Triton” provoked interesting discussions.
We continue together for a better tomorrow
We would like to thank all those who honoured us with their presence at the two events. Your response confirms that, together, we can achieve meaningful changes to protect marine biodiversity and build a future where knowledge, cooperation and action become our most powerful tools.
We continue our actions and invite you to join us in every new step we take!
