This week was a celebration of awareness and education as, from 18 to 22 November, schools across Lemnos learned about the island’s extraordinary marine biodiversity. With over 1,000 students participating, this initiative offered an exceptional opportunity for young minds to immerse themselves in Lemnos’ unique marine ecosystems while fostering a deeper appreciation for their preservation.
The program was implemented in collaboration with the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation. Throughout the week, schools across the island hosted activities that combined interactive learning with environmental stewardship:
- Day 1 (18 November): Visits to Myrina Gymnasium, Livadochori Gymnasium, Moudros Gymnasium, Moudros Technical Lyceum, and Moudros General High School.
- Day 2 (19 November): Sessions at the 2nd Primary School of Myrina, Myrina Technical Lyceum, and 1st Primary School of Myrina.
- Day 3 (21 November): Engagements with the 3rd Primary School of Myrina, Primary School and Kindergarten of Kontia, and the 3rd Kindergarten of Myrina.
- Day 4 (22 November): Activities at the Primary School in Kaspaka, concluding with a revisit to Myrina Gymnasium.
The program highlighted the global significance of marine biodiversity while emphasizing Lemnos’ unique ecosystems. Students explored a range of topics, from marine conservation to broader environmental issues, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainable practices.
Through this initiative, young learners were encouraged to think critically about environmental issues and to develop ideas for the preservation of their island’s natural treasures. These activities not only enriched their understanding but also inspired them to become advocates for a sustainable future.
The success of this program would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support of the school directors and educators. Their commitment to integrating these activities into their curricula was vital to the program’s impact.
This week of educational activities was made possible through the coordination and support of Web2Learn, which played a vital role in organizing the visits to schools and facilitating communication across the participating institutions.
Lemnos Marine Conservation and the Archipelagos Institute extend heartfelt gratitude to all participating schools for their invaluable collaboration. Together, we are shaping a future where environmental education and sustainable development take center stage.
Let’s continue this journey of knowledge and awareness, ensuring that Lemnos remains a beacon of natural beauty and conservation for generations to come!
